Chapter Chapter 1 in Ergodic Theory, 2011, pp 1-12 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Our main motivation throughout the book will be to understand the applications of ergodic theory to certain problems outside of ergodic theory, in particular to problems in number theory. This chapter introduces some of the important examples needed, and states some of the theorems arising from ergodic theory that will be discussed in this volume. We also discuss ergodic theory in more general terms.
