Abstract: Abstract Dr. Donald B. Keck retired in 2002 as a vice president and research director for Corning Incorporated. As part of Corning’s Optical WaveGuide Project team along with Robert Maurer and Peter Schultz, he invented low-loss optical fiber in 1970. This accomplishment launched the optical fiber telecommunications revolution and enabled the Internet. More than 1.6 billion kilometers of optical fiber are deployed worldwide today. Dr. Keck’s research areas include molecular spectroscopy, gradient index and aspheric optics, guided wave optics, optical fiber sensing, and optical fiber waveguides and communication. He is the author of more than 150 papers and he holds 36 patents.
