Abstract:
Abstract Tampa was the focal city for developing a prototype interoperable communications system for the Tampa metropolitan area, the fourth largest metro area in Florida. The regional cooperative effort decided that police, fire, and emergency management had sufficiently different requirements that separate but interoperable systems were most appropriate. The regional effort also led to a joint operations center which was tested during the January 2008 Gasparilla Festival which attracts crowds in excess of a quarter million to a water and street parade. The multiple systems in operation provided a single view to the field commanders in the joint operations center, and they worked so well that the regional cooperative now has applied for a federal grant to move from development to full implementation.
