Abstract: Abstract Computer algebra systems (CASs) have started to revolutionize how we learn and teach scientific subjects which make an extensive use of mathematics. CASs not only allow one to carry out the numerical computations of standard programming languages, but to also perform complicated symbolic manipulations as well. The purpose of this text is to show how a CAS can be used to breathe new life into a venerable subject, classical mechanics, by introducing the reader to a 21st century approach to problem-solving and exploration. A CAS can perform a wide variety of mathematical operations, including analytic differentiation and analytic/numerical integration, analytic/numerical solution of ordinary/partial differential equations, Taylor/series expansions of functions to arbitrary order, analytic/numerical solution and manipulation of algebraic equations, production of 2- and 3-dimensional vector field and contour plots, animation of analytic and numerical solutions.
