Abstract:
Abstract In many fiber-reinforced composites, the bond between an individual fiber and the matrix material is not of the perfect kind that can be modeled by continuity of tractions and displacements across a discrete fiber-matrix interface [1]. Instead, the bond is effected across a thin interfacial zone, an interphase, which has its own stiffness properties. Although small in thickness, interphases can significantly affect the overall mechanical properties as well as the strength of fiber-reinforced composites. This has been observed in many studies (for example, [2]–[5]). The effect of interface imperfections on the interaction between an inclusion/matrix crack is a topic of great practical interest.
