Chapter Chapter 3 in I Want to be a Mathematician, 1985, pp 36-49 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The Bachelor’s degree didn’t even break my stride. I never stopped to think—just took it for granted that I’d go on to graduate school. Finances were a problem but not an obstacle; my father continued to help till I became 22 and started earning a little. What to study?—that was a problem. I was split between philosophy and mathematics. I had an A in every undergraduate philosophy course, and I thought I under stood philosophy better than mathematics—so I decided on philosophy, but, once again, I wanted to keep my hand in mathematics. The course I chose was called “Theory of statistics”.
