Chapter Chapter 8 in I Want to be a Mathematician, 1985, pp 127-139 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Ever since my graduate school days, I had been thinking about writing the book to end all books about measure theory. Saks was excellent, but it didn’t cover enough, and some of what it did cover could be brought up to date. Lebesgue and Borel were good but too old-fashioned. Hahn’s and Carathéodory’s books on real variables were among the best sources of information, but, for them, the theory of measure and integration was only a small cupful or two in a large bucket. The missionary in me was sure that the world was waiting with bated breath for a modern version of The True Word.
