Chapter Chapter 2 in An Introduction to Models and Decompositions in Operator Theory, 1997, pp 36-48 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Shifts are of fundamental importance in operator theory. They can be considered as prototypes of infinite-dimensional operators (i.e. operators with an infinite-dimensional range). A bilateral shift is unitary, but unilateral shifts certainly are the most understood nonnormal operators. Our presentation here is directed towards Chapters 5 and 6 so that it is not intended to be an introduction to the whole subject. The reader is referred to [17, 24, 39 and 72] as complementary reading.
