Chapter 2 in The Foundations of Topological Graph Theory, 1995, pp 23-37 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The introduction to maps given here follows the treatment in Tutte (1973, 1984). Its relationship to other approaches to this subject will be investigated later. One of these approaches, via 3-graphs, is the route that will be followed in subsequent chapters, but we first need to reconcile it with the more traditional development outlined here.
