Abstract: Abstract Constructing new structures and statistical procedures in FORTRAN and macros tends to be painful in the proverbial. Something better is clearly required. We believe that the ‘something better’ has long arrived. It is not a new statistical language, or even a new statistical package, but simple adherence to classical structured programming techniques and recursion based programming languages as defined by Wirth and contemporaries. The concepts, and their resulting languages Pascal, Modula2 and C, are widely taught in computing courses, and we hope will ultimately permeate into statistical package development, as they have in most other numerate areas.
