Abstract: Abstract In this section, we examine in detail some important connections between the theory of state space linear systems and the theory of input-output linear systems. These connections comprise an elegant and aesthetically appealing segment of linear system theory, and their development, which has occurred largely over the last thirty-five years, has been carried out painstakingly (and, some might argue, ad nauseum) by many of the more widely respected researchers in the field. From the standpoint of building intuition about mathematical modeling, there is much to be gained from investigating the ways in which state space systems give rise to input-output systems, and vice versa. Furthermore, many fundamental engineering questions involving the analysis and synthesis of various real-world processes may be phrased and answered in terms of realization theory of time-invariant linear systems, which is addressed in the pages which follow.
