Chapter 4 in State Space and Input-Output Linear Systems, 1998, pp 52-72 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract It is often the case in science and engineering that a bit of abstract thinking helps one understand the “real world” somewhat better; the present section and the one which follows are written with that thought in mind. In this section, we discuss some fundamental techniques and results from “abstract” linear algebra. Although full generality is not our objective (for example, we deal only with real and complex vector spaces), most results are proven in fairly general contexts. The presentation is slanted in the direction of finite-dimensional vector spaces, since these will be our primary objects of interest in what follows. An outstanding reference for the topics to be discussed is [Halmos]. The reader should always bear in mind the definitions and constructions outlined in §1, as these are concrete examples of some of the abstract notions described here.
