Abstract: Abstract The advent of new super computer architectures is helping to revolutionize the modeling process for large-scale physical problems. The advance in computational capabilities has allowed the incorporation of more physics in the model. This has greatly increased the complexity of the mathematical models necessitating the application of a wider range of mathematical research. Through this development, the distinction between much of pure and applied mathematics is rapidly disappearing. The breadth of the modeling process, utilizing physical, mathematical, numerical, and computational concepts, will be emphasized. Specific applications involving energy-related and environmental problems will be presented and used to illustrate the need for strong interrelationships between the aspects of the steps in modeling.
