Abstract:
Abstract There has long been some criticism of the way in which the calculus lords it over the traditional lower-division mathematics curriculum. Growth of “new applications” and the prevalence of digital computing devices have recently been making thoughtful people increasingly uneasy about the relative neglect of discrete mathematics at that level. Their uneasiness can be defended from the standpoint of specific curricular concerns (e.g. the special needs of computer science students) or in general, somewhat philosophical, terms. Much has now been said about the matter, however, and while not all the arguments are equally convincing--some of them seem downright specious--a very good case has been made for displacing most, if not all, of the calculus sequence with topics of a less analytical nature. It is postulated in this essay that moves of this character deserve serious consideration.
