Abstract:
Abstract Extreme value theory has applications in many fields. Here we shall describe its usefulness in addressing a long standing problem in Astronomy. The problem concerns the brightest visible objects in the universe, the first- ranked members of rich clusters of galaxies. These galaxies, besides being the brightest, have surprisingly uniform intrinsic luminosities. The reason for this uniformity has perplexed astronomers and led to disagreement as to the nature of these galaxies.
