Abstract: Abstract “The series of the International Congresses of which this is to be one are very loosely held together,” Oswald Veblen told the 1553 mathematicians gathered in the world famous Concertgebouw of Amsterdam during the first week of September 1954. “... To symbolize the tenuous continuity ..., the President of the old Congress emerges for a moment from the obscurity in which he belongs, to propose the name of the person selected by the hosts of the new congress to preside over it.”
