Chapter Chapter 2 in Finite Automata, Their Algebras and Grammars, 1989, pp 76-105 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the introduction we outlined the idea of a “discrete deterministic system.” Here we present the fundamentals of a mathematical theory of such structures. Clearly these fundamentals will stay with us; we are to live with them, and so they had better be elegantly (i.e., simply) formulated!
