Abstract: Abstract Increasingly, researchers are managing large and complex data sets with existing packaged software systems designed for use in the research environment. For example, varying degrees of data management capabilities are found in 8MDP, P-STAT, SAS, SIR, and SPSS. These systems provide data input, statistical analysis, displays, tables, reports, etc. primarily through the use of build-in procedures, or a high-level retrieval language. Also, with the exception of P-STAT and SIR, these systems were primarily designed for batch usage.
