Abstract:
Abstract In Chap. 2 , we constructed bodies with arbitrarily small aerodynamic resistance. We used a simplified physical model by imposing several fairly restrictive assumptions. In particular, the particles have no thermal motion, that is, the medium has temperature zero, and the body is not allowed to oscillate or rotate. Of course, one can pose new questions about our solutions: are they sensitive to the thermal motion of the particles or to rotational motion of the body? Is it possible to construct bodies with arbitrarily small resistance if the temperature is positive or the body rotates? If not, then what is the least resistance the body can display? We can also ask about maximizing the resistance. In Newton’s original setting, this is a trivial problem: one can produce a body with upper front orthogonal to the direction of motion, but when there is rotation, the problem is not so simple.
