Prof. Planck Is Desperate (1901)
Alan A. Grometstein
Chapter Chapter 5 in The Roots of Things, 1999, pp 145-182 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Max Planck introduced quanta into physics. Continuity, which had been the normal condition, became the rare condition. What had been smooth became granular. This chapter tells of his conceptual struggles in discovering how a hot body radiates energy. There are equations, but you need not manipulate them: you should admire them for his genius.
