The Problem That Saved a Man’s Life

Chapter 1 in 3.1416 And All That, 1985, pp 1-6 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION—even in the world of mathematics. It is hard to believe that the mathematical ideas of a small religious sect of ancient Greece were able to save—some twenty-five hundred years later—the life of a young man who lived in Germany. The story is related to some very important mathematics and has a number of strange twists.*
