Abstract: Abstract The year 1932 marked the 35th anniversary of the First International Congress in Zürich. To many it apparently seemed an appropriate time to return to the traditionally neutral soil of Switzerland. According to the report in the published proceedings, Oswald Veblen, Princeton, the Chairman of the Delegation of the United States, “expressed the gratitude which all mathematicians must feel to Professors Fueter and Speiser for the generous way in which they came forward in Bologna, under very difficult circumstances [which he did not explain], and invited the Congress to Zürich.”
