A chapter in International Mathematical Congresses, 1986, pp 46-53 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract J. C. Fields, a professor at the University of Toronto, organized the international congress held in Toronto in 1924 and served as its president. He was so successful in obtaining financial support that the Congress ended with a surplus. This provided the initial funding for the Fields Medals. Later these were further endowed from his estate.
