Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 3 discussed the ideas of a population and a sample. Chapter 5 described probability distributions, which are used to model populations. Based on using the tools discussed in Chapter 4 to look at your data, and based on knowledge of the mechanism producing the data, you can model the data from your sampling program as having come from a particular kind of probability distribution. Once you decide on what probability distribution to use (if any), you’ll need to estimate the parameters associated with that distribution. This chapter discusses the tools available in EnvironmentalStats for S-Plus to let you estimate the parameters and quantiles of a probability distribution, and to optionally construct confidence intervals for the parameters or quantiles.
