Chapter 14 in Cell and Muscle Motility, 1982, pp 185-220 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract It is accepted that the contractile event in all types of muscle is initiated by an increase in the intracellular concentration of Cap2+. One can consider the regulatory effect of Cap2+ under two broad categories. The first involves the regulation of the level of free Cap2+ within the cell and is usually linked to a membranous system, such as the sarcoplasmic reticulum; the second category implicates the contractile apparatus and more specifically is concerned with the effect that a given free Cap2+ level has on the function of the actomyosin system.
