Chapter 2 in Calculator Calculus, 1982, pp 14-26 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract We have seen that solutions for quadratic equations were known in ancient times. But just 500 years ago the cubic equation was still an enigma. Its final solution, developed at the University of Bologna and published by Gerolamo Cardano in 1545, involves some complicated algebra and the extraction of both square roots and cube roots. The solution of the quartic equation is similar. As you will see in this chapter, it is now possible to solve such equations on the pocket calculator by simple and rapid methods.
