Abstract:
Abstract Many everyday problems in the biological, social, and physical sciences require that we find the exact situation in which some quantity is maximal or minimal. For instance, a stamping machine should make coins rapidly; but when it runs too fast, the rate at which inspectors reject faulty stampings increases and profits are diminished. Thus there is an optimal operating speed at which profit is maximal.
