Chapter Chapter 1 in An Introduction to the Mathematics of Biology: with Computer Algebra Models, 1996, pp 1-8 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Mathematics and biology have a synergistic relationship. Biology produces interesting problems, mathematics provides models to understand them, and biology returns to test the mathematical models. Recent advances in computer algebra systems have facilitated the manipulation of complicated mathematical systems. This has made it possible for scientists to focus on understanding mathematical biology, rather than on the formalities of obtaining solutions to equations.
