A chapter in Lifetime Data: Models in Reliability and Survival Analysis, 1996, pp 65-69 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This paper describes practical analytical methods based on Markov chains that allow the study of more realistic models for optical amplified communication systems while maintaining a useful level of simplicity for clarity. The methods not only yield numerical answers to particular problems but also offer insight into design tradeoffs for reliable systems.
