Chapter Chapter 10 in Adopting Agile Across Borders, 2021, pp 183-216 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Singapore, its people instilled with Confucian values of respect, duty, moderation, and a strong work ethic, is one of the so-called Four Asian Tigers. In return for a booming economy, good education, security, and affluence, the people of Singapore are attuned to a disciplined and work-oriented existence. Laws are strict, perhaps most infamously is the outlawing of chewing gum. Climbing into positions of power is the ambition of many, not just to keep up with the high cost of living, but also for being seen to have a position of high status. However, in the rush for roles that are seen as important, well respected, and highly paid, respect has been lost for the roles that do. Building things, software included, has not been regarded as a desirable long-term career path.
