Why Assigned Leaders

Ebenezer C. Ikonne

Chapter Chapter 1 in Becoming a Leader in Product Development, 2021, pp 1-26 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract I could not believe what my manager was saying to me while I sat in his office . I had not seen this coming. How could it be that I was doing such a terrible job leading my engineering team? What did he mean by this? I mean, I had been a stellar software engineer before being promoted into a managerial leadership position. Everyone had appreciated my work in my previous role and would ask for my help whenever they had problems. I had been the resident technical expert on several systems in our organization, and I had never received this amount of negative feedback from anyone in the organization. Never. But here I was in this strange position where everyone on my team was unhappy that I was the leader. They wanted me out of the role. The truth was that I did not understand how to lead effectively and ethically. Fortunately, I had a manager who was a seasoned leader, and that first feedback session set me on a different leadership path.
