Not-Found Errors
Matthew Edgar
Chapter Chapter 7 in Tech SEO Guide, 2023, pp 107-119 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter reviews not-found errors, also called 404 errors. These errors can often hurt a website's SEO performance if not properly addressed, as well as hurting conversion rates on the website. While many not-found errors do hurt performance, other errors can help performance. This is because not-found errors can be used as a means of signaling to search engines that problematic pages have been removed. Because of the complexity involved with not-found errors, and the potential impacts on performance, it is important to regularly find and address any not-found errors present on the website.
