A chapter in Semi-Markov Models, 1986, pp 463-474 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Human populations can be divided into categories on the basis of such things as place of residence, social class or level in a management hierarchy. Individuals often move between categories in anunpredictable manner so that an individual history consists of a sequence of lengths of stay and a set of transitions between categories. There may also be losses from the system and gains to it. These elements correspond to those of a semi-Markov process which thus provides a possible model for such systems.
