Chapter Chapter Three in Introduction to Multivariate Analysis, 1980, pp 34-53 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Having collected a set of multivariate data, the first step is to process the data and carry out a preliminary data analysis in order to get a general ‘feel’ of the data. These preliminary procedures are relatively straightforward, but it must be emphasized that they form an essential part of any multivariate analysis. With computer programs readily available, a deplorable tendency has grown up in recent years for researchers in some quarters to rush into using complicated multivariate techniques, like factor analysis, without first having a careful ‘look’ at the data.
