Chapter Chapter Seven in Elementary Statistical Methods, 1972, pp 162-176 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the last two chapters we have seen how the t-test can be used to derive confidence intervals and significance tests for an unknown mean. In this chapter we present some alternative methods of analysis which do not make the assumption that the observations are normally distributed. For various reasons, discussed briefly at the end of this chapter, the methods are not of great importance, although with certain types of data these methods must be used. Further the logic underlying non-parametric methods is easily explained without elaborate mathematics, so that this chapter serves as an opportunity to study the basic principles underlying methods of statistical inference in a very simple setting. Those interested in following up the subject should consult Siegel (1956), Savage (1953) and references therein.
