Abstract:
Abstract We ended our formal development of numbers with the work of Georg Cantor at the end of the nineteenth century on his transfinite numbers. This represents the last extension of the idea of number, but not the end to its story. In addition to the definition of irrational numbers by Dedekind and of transfinite numbers by Cantor, there were other great mathematical developments occurring during the last half of the twentieth century. One was the discovery of non-Euclidean geometries, and the second, the one we are concerned with here, was the attempt to establish all of mathematics on axioms.
