Abstract: Abstract After providing a brief historical background, noting national characteristics and the change from “Sick Man of Asia” to “Rising Tiger,” this chapter provides an overview of the economy of the Philippines and factors impacting participation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community. Special attention is paid to the cost of doing business and human resources. The chapter then discusses current challenges and future prospects, particularly as regards labour and services exports, manufacturing, construction, and tourism.
