Abstract: Abstract The divided welfare state refers to two very different welfare states within one and the same nation, a visible welfare state that is aimed at some groups and a hidden welfare state that is aimed at other groups. Today, Sweden takes steps towards a divided welfare state with all its characteristics. Increased inequality, increased invisibility and ever-more actors who push for further division of the welfare states. The clearest example is the rapid rise of private health insurance, which creates two different queues to healthcare and which is now signed by every tenth person in working age. The chapter puts the divided welfare state in a Swedish and an international perspective. It also discusses previous and current research in this area.
