Chapter Chapter 2 in The Quest for a Divided Welfare State, 2019, pp 17-32 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The rapid rise of private health insurance has created two queues to hospitals and health centres, one queue that is faster than the other. This is possible due to the private provider’s agreements with the county councils on the one hand and the agreements with the insurance companies on the other. The private providers undertake to receive county council patients in accordance with the waiting times of the public care guarantee, and the same provider commits to receiving policyholders in accordance with the short waiting times that the insurance companies promise their customers. The chapter investigates the parallel healthcare system. Further, it discusses different versions of private health insurance and excluding mechanisms triggered by the insurance companies’ fear of adverse selection.
