Chapter Chapter 3 in The Flow of Organizational Culture, 2020, pp 17-39 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Having a clear mental model or paradigm of organizational culture is critical to one’s ability to understand and work with cultures from a consultant’s perspective. In this chapter, I will deal with several key elements of an effective mental model of organizational culture. I will begin with an examination of complex adaptive systems (CAS) and the related concept of emergence, both elements are necessary for understanding the models that I will later present. Subsequently, I will discuss the importance of narrative in organizational culture. The chapter also covers the role of symbols and metaphors in the creation and understanding of organizational culture, and the role of culture in creating meaning and context in our everyday world. The chapter concludes with presentations and discussions of the culture models of Schein, Seel, Hatch, and MacQueen.
