Chapter Chapter 7 in The Flow of Organizational Culture, 2020, pp 91-118 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The central question throughout this book is, “How do people and organizations construct organizational cultures?” In this chapter, we explore that question by examining Karl Weick’s work on sensemaking. We examine Weick’s definition of sensemaking and the processes involved in it. We begin to see how sensemaking, and thus culture, provides people with the context for the work they do and how they think about it. Links between Weick’s work and that of Schein are presented. We also explore the contribution of neuroscience and neuropsychology to sensemaking to provide depth of understanding. The chapter concludes by drawing parallels between sensemaking, William Bridges’ ideas of organizational transitions, and thus, organizational culture.
