Chapter Chapter 4 in The Core-Periphery Divide in the European Union, 2019, pp 113-140 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract EDS shows how old development paradigms brought again new crises of global capitalism. The chapter presents the critique of the current development theory and policy as put forward by EDS (e.g. ‘development from above’) which was embedded into the crises of global capitalism in the 1970s and 1980s. Transnational companies are being identified as not so new dominant actors that are being disguised by old development paradigms and economic thinking. New crises and the policies in the core to counter them brought more spatial specialization, functional integration, external dependency, and disintegration to Peripheral Regions. ‘Development’ seems to have led from dependent industrialization and peripheral de-industrialization.
