Abstract: Abstract Global investment and growth patterns have changed considerably over recent years. Multinationals from emerging markets have become substantially more important. Recently this has raised some concerns but has also engendered hope that emerging market multinationals can contribute to economic growth in Europe. In the first part of this chapter, a brief historical overview of global foreign direct investment (FDI) flows is provided. In the second part, mainstream approaches are contrasted with alternative views. In particular, insights based on critical political economy and post-Keynesian perspectives are presented. In so doing, specificities of emerging market multinationals and current developments are put into a broader perspective. It is concluded that the effects of emerging market multinationals and FDI depend on core-periphery relationships, economic development models, and the institutional context. Hence, the evaluation of the impact of emerging market multinationals in Europe requires a detailed multidimensional analysis.
