Chapter Chapter 1 in Algorithmic Governance, 2019, pp 1-10 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Technological changes, particularly those related to the collection, analysis, and application of data, have significantly disrupted the personal, public, and economic domains. With both human persons and their environments being knowable to an unprecedented extent, and trends, correlations and future trends derivable from the accumulated data, a new mode of economic organisation, usually referred to as the platform economy, has taken hold. However, the internal logic of this economy is impossible to contain in its own domain and has, therefore, also spread into the governance of everyday life, not least because an ever-growing part of everyday life is lived through such platforms. Hence, this introductory chapter sets out the context for the book by delving into today’s digital-first transformations.
