Chapter 1 in Six Sigma for Students, 2020, pp 3-40 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract As an introduction, this chapter first discusses basic characteristics of Six Sigma philosophy, quality definitions using four approaches, six dimensions of quality definition, and “value” term in quality definition. Quality definitions are categorized into four managerial perspectives: (1) the product-based approach, (2) the manufacturing-based approach, (3) the value-based approach, and (4) the user-based approach. Then, the contributions of quality gurus to quality and Six Sigma literature are discussed in detail. These quality gurus are Walter Shewhart, W. Edwards Deming, Joseph M. Juran, Armand V. Feigenbaum, Kaoru Ishikawa, Taiichi Ohno, Shigeo Shingo, Genichi Taguchi, Philip Crosby, David Garvin, and Douglas Montgomery. Historical background of Six Sigma, standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on Six Sigma, types of costs of quality, and performance metrics used in quality cost calculations are detailed in this chapter. Costs of quality are grouped into two main categories: costs of good quality and costs of poor quality. Costs of good quality comprises of prevention costs and appraisal costs, while costs of poor quality contain internal failure costs and external failure costs.
