A chapter in The Palgrave Handbook of Corporate Social Responsibility, 2021, pp 1071-1101 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract There is an incommensurable difference between CSR (corporate social responsibility) in the USA as opposed to the EU and Asia. It is more accurate to say that the expression “CSR” is primarily an EU phenomenon, while the expression “corporate governance” dominates the USA/UK. The origins of the differences are historical, cultural, ideological, and legal. Specifically, CSR/CG cannot operate independent of economic and political norms. Moreover, these differences have economic and political consequences. As such, the conceptions are ultimately in conflict. Current renegotiation of trade deals reveals the conflict between the rival versions. All attempts to transcend these differences inevitably become advocacy of one of the versions.
