Abstract:
Abstract A model is constructed of two tufted C4 grasses, Schizachyrium scoparium and Paspalum plicatulum, growing in mono and mixed culture. Two types of vegetative growth are included: the upward growth of the shoots and the lateral growth of the crown. Two types of competition are modeled: “fair” competition for resources and “direct” inter-species competition. Model parameters are derived from published experimental data. Inter-species competition based only on resource sharing is found to be insufficient to explain experimental results, and a direct competition term is required. The model suggests that both species directly inhibit the growth of the other one, with Paspalum plicatulum having the larger inhibitory effect on Schizachyrium scoparium.
