Chapter Chapter 4 in Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities I, 2020, pp 243-273 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This is a survey of stratification theory in the differentiable category from its beginnings with Whitney, Thom and Mather until the present day. We concentrate mainly on the properties of C ∞ stratified sets and of stratifications of subanalytic or definable sets, with some reference to stratifications of complex analytic sets. Brief mention is made of the theory of stratified mappings.
