Chapter Chapter 2 in Understanding and Profiting from Intellectual Property in International Business, 2021, pp 11-38 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter focuses on the theoretical components of intellectual property (IP). First, I discuss IP as a collective concept and some identical or similar terms. Second, the focus shifts to the sub-concepts under IP because its scope has expanded considerably over the years. Third, I identify the common characteristics. Next, this chapter lays out the theoretical arguments for IP protection (IPP), emphasizing the significance but difficulties in balancing interests between owners and the public. Finally, after summarizing theoretical schools of thought, I clarify the emphasis of this book.
