Chapter Chapter 5 in Beyond Economics, 2020, pp 61-69 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the discussion about affective happiness in Chap. 3 we found that affective happiness, of different individuals and in different periods of time, is comparable in as far as it depends on the gratification of general human needs. In Chap. 4 concerning cognitive happiness we found that that there are good reasons to expect that people adopt consistent and similar standards and do not change them too often. We still have to decide, however, about the consistency, comparability and stability of overall happiness. We still have to find out, more precisely, whether we should pay attention to overall happiness at all, or should just pay attention to either affective or cognitive happiness. In this chapter we decide about the consistency and stability of overall happiness, and in the next chapter about its comparability. Before we turn to the mutual consistency of affective and cognitive happiness, we will first pay attention to an interesting preliminary question about their mutual relation: is there any dominance of affective or cognitive happiness, in view of their relations with the body and the mind? The practical answer is that this philosophical discussion is undecided and that the relations between affective and cognitive happiness are based on parity and mutual dependency.
